Sitaram Yechury Passes Away

Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), passed away on Thursday afternoon at the age of 72. Yechury had been ill for several days, and his health had been deteriorating.

According to reports, Yechury had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at AIIMS in Delhi due to a lung infection and pneumonia. He had been undergoing treatment there for some time, receiving oxygen support under the care of multiple doctors. AIIMS released a statement confirming that Yechury had been admitted on August 19 due to pneumonia, and he passed away on September 12 at 3:05 PM. His family has donated his body to AIIMS for research purposes.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences upon hearing the news. In a tweet, she said, “I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Mr. Sitaram Yechury. I have known him for a long time, and his death is a great loss to national politics. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues.”

A few months ago, Yechury had undergone cataract surgery, and he had recently visited AIIMS for a follow-up checkup. During that time, he developed a fever and breathing difficulties, which led to his hospitalization. Despite intensive treatment, his condition worsened, and he was moved to the ICU, where he passed away on Thursday.
