In a dramatic escalation of hostilities, Iran launched over 400 missiles into Israel on Tuesday, in retaliation for the killing of Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. The missile barrage triggered air raid sirens across Israel, prompting millions of civilians to seek shelter in bomb shelters. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) quickly activated defense systems, including the Iron Dome, to intercept the incoming missiles.

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant emphasized that the conflict was far from over, while authorities allowed citizens to cautiously emerge from shelters after assessing the situation. However, they were urged to remain vigilant and adhere to the guidelines of the Home Front Command.
The IDF has confirmed that while the immediate threat from Iranian missiles has subsided, the military remains on high alert. “We remain prepared to defend Israel and will respond to this missile attack decisively at a time and place of our choosing,” said IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari.
Iran’s Justification for the Attack
Iran’s attack was officially described as retaliation for the deaths of Ismail Haniyeh, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and Martyr Nilforooshan. Iran’s mission to the United Nations in New York stated, “This is a legal and legitimate response to the terrorist acts of the Zionist regime.” Iranian officials warned of a “subsequent and crushing response” if Israel or its allies escalate the conflict further.
US Response
In response to the attacks, US President Joe Biden ordered the US military to aid Israel’s defense by intercepting Iranian missiles. The US has bolstered its military presence in the region and, according to US Secretary of Defence Lloyd J. Austin III, is prepared to deliver “severe consequences” should Iran continue its offensive.
Austin reaffirmed the United States’ readiness to protect its allies, emphasizing that US forces are well-positioned to counter any threats posed by Iran or its proxies. The US had previously supported Israel during a similar missile and drone attack launched by Iran in April, successfully intercepting the majority of the threats.
Escalating Conflict in Lebanon
Alongside the missile barrage, Israel’s military operations against Hezbollah intensified on Tuesday, with ground forces crossing into Lebanon to target the militant group’s positions. The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has been building for weeks, with Israel’s airstrikes killing several senior leaders of Hezbollah, including Nasrallah.
